What to expect from Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s upcoming visit to Vietnam

Chinese Party General Secretary and President Xi Jinping is set to pay a state visit to Vietnam on Monday and Tuesday, during which he will hold a packed schedule of high-level meetings and witness the signing of numerous cooperation agreements between the two countries, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This will be Xi ’s second state visit to Vietnam during his third term, coming less than a year after Vietnamese Party General Secretary To Lam's visit to China.

The visit comes amid the positive development of the relations between Vietnam and China, holding added significance as 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of the diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Strategic dialogues at highest level

Ahead of the visit, Vietnam's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son emphasized the significance of the trip, calling it a ‘strategic political event with long-term impact’ for the bilateral relationship.

He highlighted that the visit reflects the commitment of both the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Chinese Communist Party to strengthening ties.

During his stay in Hanoi, Xi is expected to have talks with Party chief Lam and State President Luong Cuong.

He will also meet Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man to discuss broad strategic orientations and initiatives aimed at deepening cooperation across key sectors.

In addition, the Chinese leader will participate in other major diplomatic activities, said Deputy PM Son.

Vietnam hopes the visit will further solidify political trust through regular high-level exchanges.

Discussions will likely include the sharing of governance experience and strategies for sustainable development, as both countries continue adapting to ongoing uncertainties in the region and the world.

The visit is also expected to chart new directions for practical cooperation, with an emphasis on quality, efficiency, and sustainability.

Such sectors as standard-gauge railway construction, agricultural trade, science and technology, education, digital economy, and green development are among the key areas where Vietnam seeks deeper engagement with China.

Dozens of agreements to be signed

One of the most anticipated outcomes of the visit is the signing of approximately 40 cooperation documents between ministries, agencies, and localities of both nations, said the deputy prime minister.

These agreements will provide a robust framework for expanding collaboration in various fields.

As the visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Vietnam and China, it is expected to generate a positive ripple effect across all levels of society and government, paving the way for the implementation of the ‘Vietnam-China People-to-People Exchange Year.’

Vietnam also hopes the visit will facilitate honest and constructive discussions on longstanding issues, particularly regarding border and maritime disputes.

Both sides are expected to approach these matters with mutual understanding, seeking to manage differences and prevent them from hindering the broader development of bilateral ties.
