Top Chinese leader Xi Jinping to pay state visit to Vietnam next week
Chinese Party General Secretary and President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to Vietnam from April 14 to 15 at the invitation of Vietnamese Party General Secretary To Lam and State President Luong Cuong, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This will be Xi Jinping’s second state visit to Vietnam during his third term.
Xi has visited Vietnam four times as a Chinese leader, including once in December 2011 when he was vice-president of China.
The visit next week comes amid the positive development of the relations between Vietnam and China and holds added significance as 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of the diplomatic ties between the two countries.
The two sides have recently intensified high-level exchanges, including a historic visit by Vietnamese Party General Secretary and President To Lam to China in August 2024, and Chinese Party General Secretary and President Xi Jinping’s visit to Vietnam in December 2023.
During Xi's 2023 visit to Vietnam, both countries issued a joint statement on continuing to deepen and elevate the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries, and building a Vietnam-China community with a shared future that carries strategic significance.
High-level leaders on both sides reviewed notable achievements, including the signing of 36 cooperation documents across political-diplomatic, security-defense, and practical fields at governmental, ministerial, and local levels.
During Vietnamese Party chief and State President To Lam's visit to China in August 2024, the two sides released a joint statement on further strengthening their comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and promoting the building of the Vietnam-China community with a shared future with strategic significance, laying a solid foundation and long-term direction for the two countries’ bilateral relations to enter a new development phase.
In 2024, bilateral trade between Vietnam and China reached a record of US$205.2 billion.
China became Vietnam's first trading partner with a trade value exceeding $200 billion and remains Vietnam’s largest trading partner.
Vietnam is also China’s largest trading partner within ASEAN.
