Vietnamese tourists cancel Bangkok trips following Myanmar earthquake tremors

Many tour operators said that Vietnamese tourists have canceled tours to Bangkok after the city experienced tremors from a magnitude-7.7 earthquake in Myanmar on Friday, while travelers to other destinations in Thailand have kept their original schedules.

Vietnamese tourists' travel plans to Bangkok are being affected by the aftershocks of the earthquake in Myanmar.

Currently, all flights from Vietnam to Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports have resumed operations.

Tour operators are continuing with their itineraries. However, experts have advised tourists to stay updated on the situation.

Many tours to Bangkok from Vietnam have been suspended. The severe aftershocks and the emergency declaration in Myanmar and Thailand have led to the cancelation of tours to Bangkok in April.

For example, Viet Media Travel Corporation's 40 travelers scheduled to depart in early April had their tour canceled, with the company monitoring the situation to reschedule the trip.

Meanwhile, a representative from Vietravel told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Sunday that Bangkok tours remained unchanged.

Vietravel added that over 300 customers were already in Pattaya and Phuket, which are unaffected by the tremors, and their schedules would continue as planned.

A Vietravel tour operator confirmed that by Sunday, the situation had stabilized. Some of the tours to Thailand were expected to conclude and tourists will return to Vietnam as originally planned by the middle of the following week.

Tran Thi Bao Thu, a representative from Vietluxtour, stated that two of their groups were in Pattaya and had not been affected.

"Vietluxtour and our partners are still closely monitoring the situation and the conditions at tourist sites,” Thu said.

News of the earthquake in Myanmar with a significant impact on Thailand, a popular travel destination for Vietnamese tourists, has heightened concern among travelers.

Travel forums are advising individual travelers to consider adjusting their schedules, while group tours should stay in close contact with their travel agencies to ensure a safe trip.

Flights to Thailand, Myanmar operated normally

Vietnamese airlines reported on Sunday that flights to and from Thailand and Myanmar were operated normally, although some delays were inevitable.

There were no major cancelation or rescheduling reports.

On Sunday morning, many flights from Vietnam Airlines and Bamboo Airways, along with international carriers like AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines, continued as scheduled. For instance, ThaiAsia’s flight FD567 from Ho Chi Minh City to Don Mueang, Thailand departed at 9:45 am.

Meanwhile, Vietnam Airlines’ flight VN605 from Ho Chi Minh City to Bangkok, originally scheduled to depart at 11:35 am, was delayed by about one hour. Other flights to Thailand and Malaysia, such as Malaysia Airlines' MH751 to Kuala Lumpur and flights of Vietjet and Vietravel Airlines to Bangkok, were operated as planned.

Regarding the magnitude-7.7 earthquake in Myanmar, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam assessed that the impact on domestic aviation operations was minimal.

Airlines are collaborating with travel agencies to adjust plans and even increase flights if customer demand rises in the coming days. Airlines have also assured that they are providing support around the clock through official channels like hotlines, email, Facebook, and Zalo.

The earthquake, which struck Myanmar at 1:20 p.m. (Vietnam time) on Friday, is one of the country's strongest in a century, shaking the war-torn Southeast Asian nation.

Tremors were felt in neighboring areas, including Bangkok, as well as Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in Vietnam.

As of Sunday, the quake has left around 1,700 people dead, 3,400 injured, and more than 300 missing, Reuters reported, citing Myanmar’s military government.
