Japanese Man Gets 42 Months for Spying in China

Beijing, July 16 (Jiji Press)--A Chinese district court Wednesday sentenced a Japanese man in his 60s to three years and six months in prison for espionage.
The employee of Japanese drugmaker Astellas Pharma Inc. was detained by Chinese authorities in March 2023 shortly before leaving for Japan after completing his assignment term in China.
He was indicted in August 2024, and the first hearing of his trial took place in November of the same year.
Japanese Ambassador to China Kenji Kanasugi and other officials from the Japanese Embassy in Beijing sat in the audience for Wednesday's court hearing.
"It's extremely regrettable that such a ruling was issued," Kanasugi told reporters after the hearing.
