Japan Core Machinery Orders Fall 1.2 Pct in Dec.

Tokyo, Feb. 19 (Jiji Press)--Japan's seasonally adjusted core machinery orders in December last year fell 1.2 pct from the previous month, the first decline in three months, the Cabinet Office said Wednesday.
The core orders, a leading private-sector capital investment indicator that excludes orders for ships and machines used by power utilities, totaled 889.3 billion yen.
The government agency kept its basic assessment on machinery orders unchanged, saying they are showing signs of picking up.
The office also said that in 2024 core machinery orders grew 1.5 pct from the year before to 10,513.1 billion yen, following a 3.6 pct drop in 2023.
In December alone, machinery orders from manufacturers plunged 10.4 pct from November to 414.7 billion yen amid sluggish demand for boilers and turbines, with those from makers in 11 of the 17 sectors surveyed shrinking.
