Teodoro: Time for PAF to have airborne early warning, control system

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Air Force (PAF) should have its own airborne early warning and control system (AWACS) in its arsenal, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said.
“It is not only the MRF per se, which we need to deal with, but also to make the MRFs operational as a force package — meaning to say, you need the AWACS capability,” Teodoro said in a press conference on Monday.
AWACS is a mobile, long-range radar surveillance and control center that provides accurate, real-time information on weather, altitude, and early warning of enemy activity, among other capabilities.
In 2023, PAF officials inspected the Sweden-made Saab 340 AWACS during a visit to Saab facilities.
At the time, the deal for Swedish AWACS was not yet part of the discussions when the Department of National Defense announced progress in its negotiations with Saab for several multirole supersonic fighter jets from Stockholm.

But now, Teodoro said, “a lot of countries have experienced the fact that they are realizing that they need AWACS.” /mcm
