Japan Core Consumer Prices Up 3.1 Pct in July
Tokyo, Aug. 22 (Jiji Press)--Japan's core consumer price index in July rose 3.1 pct from a year before, up for the 47th straight month, the internal affairs ministry said Friday.
The core CPI, which excludes the often volatile fresh food prices, stood at 111.6 against the 2020 base of 100.
Although food prices are soaring, the index's growth rate continued to shrink as energy prices fell for the first time in 16 months.
Energy prices slipped 0.3 pct. Due to a decrease in fuel prices, electricity fees declined 0.7 pct, and city gas charges were down 0.9 pct. The falls also came after last year's sharp rises caused by the termination of government subsidies for electricity and gas charges.
Food prices excluding fresh items jumped 8.3 pct, a bigger increase than the previous month's 8.2 pct.
