Japan's U.S.-Bound Exports Fall for 4th Straight Month

Tokyo, Aug. 20 (Jiji Press)--Japan's exports to the United States fell for the fourth consecutive month in July, as automobile exports shrank due to additional U.S. tariffs, Finance Ministry preliminary data showed Wednesday.
The exports declined 10.1 pct from a year earlier to 1,728.5 billion yen. Japan's customs-cleared trade surplus with the United States sank 23.9 pct to 585.1 billion yen.
Vehicle exports to the United States dropped 28.4 pct in value and 3.2 pct in volume, although Japanese automakers reduced their vehicle prices to avoid a decrease in sales following the additional 25 pct tariffs on automobile imports imposed in April.
U.S.-bound exports of auto parts declined 17.4 pct, and those of semiconductor manufacturing equipment tumbled 31.3 pct.
In global trade, Japan swung to a deficit of 117.5 billion yen.
