Japan's Current-Account Surplus Grows 9 Pct in 1st Half

Tokyo, Aug. 8 (Jiji Press)--Japan's current-account surplus expanded 9.1 pct in the first half of this year from a year before thanks to a decrease in the goods trade deficit, the Finance Ministry said in a preliminary report on Friday.
The surplus in the current account, the broadest measure of a country's international trade and investment flows, totaled 14,598.8 billion yen.
The goods trade deficit narrowed to 1,758.9 billion yen from 2,473.8 billion yen a year earlier on robust exports of semiconductor manufacturing equipment and automobiles.
The surplus in the primary income account, which mainly covers Japanese companies' dividend and interest receipts from abroad, rose 3.3 pct to 20,766.8 billion yen, a half-year record.
Japan's services trade posted a deficit of 1,377.9 billion yen.
