Banff, Canada, May 21 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato said Wednesday that he and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent did not discuss foreign exchange rate levels in their meeting the same day.
In their talks, held on the sidelines of a Group of Seven meeting of finance ministers and central bank chiefs in Banff, Canada, the two finance chiefs reaffirmed the principle that exchange rates should be determined by the market, Kato told reporters.
The Japanese minister said he told the U.S. side that Tokyo is "concerned about the economic and market impacts" of the high tariff policy implemented by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. Kato strongly called for a review of the tariff measures, saying that they are "extremely regrettable."
Kato said he told Bessent that tariff measures are not always an appropriate instrument to correct trade imbalances.
The U.S. Treasury Department released a statement also saying that exchange rate levels were not discussed in the meeting.
