Japan Visitors' Spending Tops 8 T. Yen for 1st Time

Tokyo, Jan. 15 (Jiji Press)--Spending by visitors to Japan in 2024 jumped 53.4 pct from the previous year to 8,139.5 billion yen, exceeding 8 trillion yen for the first time ever, the Japan Tourism Agency said in a preliminary report Wednesday.
The figure far surpassed the previous record of 5,306.5 billion yen in 2023, thanks chiefly to sharp growth in the number of visitors backed by the yen's depreciation and a jump in lodging expenses, which made up slightly over 30 pct of their total spending.
Spending by visitors from mainland China accounted for some 20 pct of the total. Estimated per-visitor consumption was up 6.8 pct from the previous year at 227,242 yen.
According to separate estimates by the Japan National Tourism Organization, a record 36,869,900 foreigners visited the country last year, registering a year-on-year rise of 47.1 pct and topping the pre-pandemic 2019 level of approximately 31.88 million.
In December alone, the number of visitors rose 27.6 pct from a year earlier to 3,489,800, an all-time high for any month.
