Tech insider 9to5Google reveals Google is allegedly testing its “AI Mode” for its online search engine.

It says the new feature offers a “persistent place to ask more open-ended or exploratory questions and get generated AI Overview-style responses.”

The website claims to have seen details of the Google AI Mode in an internal company email, which says:

“Search intelligently research[ing] for you — organizing information into easy-to-digest breakdowns with links to explore content across the web.”

Google gave employees example queries for AI Mode’s target users:

  • “How many boxes of spaghetti should I buy to feed 6 adults and 10 children and have enough for seconds?”

  • “Compare wool, down and synthetic jackets in terms of insulation, water resistance and durability.”

  • “What do I need to get started with aquascaping?”

Google AI Mode uses a “custom version” of the Gemini 2.0 AI model, which enables “advanced reasoning and thinking capabilities.”

The email supposedly shares a screenshot of the “early release.”

Moreover, it shows a text box at the bottom of the answer to ask a follow-up question.

Nowadays, Google search provides AI Overviews, which summarize the top search results for easy viewing.

However, many online publishers worry that AI Overviews may divert online traffic away from them.

People are likely to ignore clicking on search results if AI Overviews provide their much-needed information.

Google has yet to confirm this rumored search engine feature.

Nevertheless, it may launch this year as CEO Sundar Pichai claimed, “2025 is going to be one of the biggest years for Search innovation yet.”
